    There is a subtle different between trying to be one of the guys/gals and connecting with a salesrep in such a way that they trust you are there to help and develop them. Getting to close as in “hanging one on with the boys” makes it more difficult to critique a salesperson’s performance if it’s sub-par. They end up not taking manager’s comments in the vein they were intended because, hey, you’re my buddy, don’t hand me that stuff! Connecting with salespeople is complex because it means the manager has to be a bit of a chameleon. They have to, in effect, crawl inside a person’s head to understand what makes them tick. And, if that’s not hard enough they have to understand the intricacies of NLP and/or reading how to “link” with the person. Once the connection is made then there is firm ground on which to critique salespeople. Frankly, it’s an art form.
